Panaji: Former Goa CM and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veteran Laxmikant Parsekar has announced his resignation from the party. In fact, Parsekar has not been nominated by the party for the upcoming state assembly elections, after which he said he would formally resign by this evening.
The BJP had released a list of candidates for the Goa assembly elections a day ago, which did not name Laxmikant Parsekar. He is now believed to be going to the electoral riots alone after not being given a ticket. They can contest independent elections. The BJP has given the ticket to sitting MLA Dayanand Sopate from the Mandrem assembly constituency. Sopate defeated Parsekar as a Congress candidate in the 2017 state elections, but joined the ruling party in 2019.
According to reports, former Goa CM Laxmikant Parsekar convened an early meeting of his supporters after the BJP released its first list of candidates. He is upset with the BJP over Dayanand Sopate being fielded from Mandrem seat in his place in the Goa elections. Goa will go to the polls in the same phase on February 14 and the counting of votes will take place on March 10. In the next 2-to 3 days, Mandrem will decide on his political decision to contest the Goa elections from the constituency.
