Panaji: Just before the Goa assembly elections, Congress has suffered another major setback. In fact, the party's state executive chairman, Aleixo Lourenco, resigned as an assembly member on Monday. After this, the number of Congress members in 40 assembly seats has come down to just two. Earlier, two other Congress leaders had also resigned from the post of MLA.
It may be recalled that assembly elections are proposed in Goa early next year. In particular, Congress last week released its first list of eight candidates for the upcoming state elections and included Lourenco's name. Lourenco, who represents The Kartorim assembly constituency in the South Goa district, submitted his resignation to the assembly speaker's office on Monday afternoon. Sources said he later resigned from Congress as well. Lourenco, who was also the executive chairman of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, has not responded to the matter. Sources said he is likely to soon take over the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Earlier this month, former Goa CM Ravi Naik resigned as a Congress MLA. Some time ago, former CM Luizinho Faleiro had also quit Congress and suppressed the TMC. He has decided to contest the Goa Assembly elections. In the 2017 Goa assembly elections, Congress won 17 seats and became the largest party. But the BJP, which won 13 seats, tied up with some regional parties and independents to form the government in the state. The Congress currently has only two MLAs in the Assembly.
