Xiaomi has confirmed that it will not be introducing its electric car, the SU7, in India anytime soon. The tech giant has chosen to focus on the Chinese market, where the vehicle has seen promising sales since its launch earlier this year.

Anuj Sharma, Chief Marketing Officer at Xiaomi India, said, “It is not an easy business. The company will initially focus on the China market and then look at expansion globally. For India, we need to study and research before committing anything.”

The SU7, also known as the Speed Ultra, represents a major step for Xiaomi as it ventures beyond its core smartphone business into the electric vehicle (EV) market. With an investment of USD 10 billion in the automotive sector, Xiaomi has committed to revolutionizing the EV space.

Features and Pricing of the Xiaomi SU7

Deliveries of the SU7 began in March 2024 in China, where it received a strong reception. The base model is priced at under USD 30,000 (approximately INR 25 lakh), making it around USD 4,000 (INR 3.3 lakh) cheaper than Tesla's Model 3 in China.

The SU7 is available in two versions, offering different range options:

  1. A standard version with a driving range of up to 668 km on a single charge.
  2. An extended-range version capable of covering up to 800 km on one charge.

This variety gives consumers flexibility based on their preferences for range and performance.

Advanced Technology and Production Details

Unveiled in December 2023, the SU7 boasts "super electric motor" technology, promising acceleration speeds faster than EVs from Tesla and Porsche. The sedan is manufactured at a facility owned by the BAIC Group in Beijing, which has an annual production capacity of 200,000 vehicles.

Xiaomi is one of the few new entrants in China's EV market to secure government approval, as regulators remain cautious about oversupply in the sector.

Xiaomi's Diversification Strategy

Amid a slowdown in smartphone demand, Xiaomi first announced its plans to enter the EV market in 2021. The SU7 is a cornerstone of this diversification strategy, aimed at establishing Xiaomi as a significant player in the global automotive industry.
