In the early hours of Saturday morning, fresh violence erupted in Manipur's Jiribam district, resulting in the deaths of five individuals. According to local authorities, the incident began with the targeted killing of a resident.
The victim, who lived alone in a remote area approximately 5 kilometers from the district headquarters, was shot while sleeping. Following this incident, a fierce gunfight ensued between armed groups from rival communities about 7 kilometers from the district headquarters. This clash resulted in the deaths of four additional individuals, including three militants from the region.
The situation remains tense as further details about the conflict and its underlying causes are still emerging.
A security officer stationed in Manipur has indicated that the casualty count from the recent violence could rise. "The gunfight began this morning after militants entered a village and killed a man. This killing is part of ongoing ethnic clashes. The firefight is still ongoing, and we have reports that the deceased include individuals from both the Kuki and Meitei communities."
The situation in Manipur, already volatile due to ethnic tensions over the past 18 months, has escalated significantly in the last five days with a new surge of violence.
On Friday night, shortly after the elderly man's death in Bishnupur, groups in Imphal attempted to raid the armories of the 2 Manipur Rifles and 7 Manipur Rifles. However, security forces successfully prevented the looting attempts.
