OpenAI has introduced an update to its Advanced Voice Mode, allowing paid desktop users to access the feature directly through the ChatGPT website, eliminating the need to use the mobile app. This update, which was announced on November 20, enhances the user experience by making it easier to engage in voice conversations with the AI.

Kevin Weil, OpenAI's Chief Product Officer, shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that the Advanced Voice Mode feature is now available to all paid users on the desktop version of ChatGPT. This expansion follows its initial release for smartphone users and offers web users the same capabilities.

The Advanced Voice Mode, which was first introduced in September for Android and iOS, allows ChatGPT to engage in natural, human-like conversations. Powered by GPT-4o’s built-in audio technology, the feature not only enables real-time voice interactions but also responds with emotion and can interpret non-verbal cues, such as speech speed and tone. The feature offers nine different voices, each with a unique tone and character, which users can choose depending on the context of their conversation.

To start a voice conversation, users need to click the Voice icon located at the bottom-right corner of the ChatGPT prompt window. Once granted permission to access the microphone, users can begin speaking, and the AI will respond in real-time. The system will display a blue orb on the screen, indicating that the voice mode is active.

Currently, this feature is available only to paid subscribers, including Plus, Enterprise, Teams, and Edu users. However, OpenAI plans to make it available for free to all users in the coming weeks.
