SpiceJet, one of India’s leading low-cost carriers, has unveiled its ambitious plan to unground 10 aircraft by mid-April 2025, signaling a robust push toward fleet expansion and operational enhancement. Of these 10 aircraft, four will be Boeing 737 MAX planes, known for their fuel efficiency and advanced technology. This move will significantly augment SpiceJet’s operational capacity, adding to its existing fleet of 28 aircraft.
Expansion and Fleet Restoration
Since October 2024, SpiceJet has already added 10 planes to its fleet. This included three previously grounded aircraft and seven leased planes. Over the last three months, the airline's network expansion has added over 60 new flights, enhancing connectivity and service for passengers.
Restoring grounded aircraft has been a challenge for airlines globally, especially after the pandemic. Issues such as shortages of maintenance facilities, spare parts, and skilled personnel have caused delays and increased costs. SpiceJet, too, has faced hurdles in reactivating its parked fleet while working to stabilize its operations and finances.
Agreement with StandardAero
To expedite the restoration process, SpiceJet entered into a service agreement with StandardAero, a US-based Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) provider. The agreement is aimed at restoring the airline's Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, which currently account for seven planes in its fleet with an average age of 6.1 years. By April 2025, three of these aircraft are expected to return to active operations.
Recovery Efforts
In addition to fleet expansion, SpiceJet has made progress in settling long-standing dues and resolving disputes with its lessors. While the airline has yet to regain its pre-pandemic peak capacity, the recent developments reflect its commitment to rebuilding operations and improving passenger services.
SpiceJet’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its fleet and expand its network are seen as crucial steps in regaining market confidence and improving overall performance.
The reintroduction of these planes is expected to support the airline in meeting the rising demand for domestic and international travel, improving flight frequency on key routes, and enhancing customer experience. Furthermore, this initiative aligns with the airline’s broader strategy to strengthen its market position amidst a fiercely competitive aviation sector in India.
