Sambhal: SP MP from Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, Shafiqur Rahman Burke died on Tuesday at the age of 94. He breathed his last at Siddha Hospital in Moradabad. Let us tell you that his health was deteriorating for some time. He was admitted to the hospital due to physical weakness and loose motion. Doctors diagnosed him with kidney infection. Shafiqur Rahman was born on 11 July 1930. He started politics with Chaudhary Charan Singh. He was also the convenor of Babri Masjid Action Committee. He was known across the country for raising the voice of Muslims and having an honest image.
He had worked closely with Mulayam Singh Yadav during the formation of SP and was also called the founder member of Samajwadi Party. Burke, currently Samajwadi Party MP from Sambhal, had won the Lok Sabha elections 5 times. He won the Moradabad Lok Sabha seat thrice from Samajwadi Party in the years 1996, 1998 and 2004. Subsequently, he managed to win from Sambhal Lok Sabha in 2009 on Bahujan Samaj Party ticket. Then in 2019, he won again from Sambhal on Samajwadi Party ticket. However, he lost from Moradabad seat in 1999 and Sambhal seat in 2014 Lok Sabha elections by a margin of only 5174 votes.
Apart from this, Shafiqur Rahman Burke was elected MLA from Sambhal seat four times and was also a cabinet minister in the Uttar Pradesh government once. He was MLA from 1974 to 1977, from 1977 to 1980, from 1985 to 1989 and then till 1991. His grandson won the 2022 Moradabad seat in the assembly elections. In 2022, Burke made his grandson Ziaur Rahman Burke the MLA from Kundarki seat of Moradabad by getting him a ticket from Samajwadi Party. Shafiqur Rahman Burke had put in all his strength to make his grandson win the Kundarki seat.
