Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address a special session of the Guyanese Parliament on Thursday, November 21, 2024, during his ongoing visit to the country. This marks a significant milestone in his diplomatic efforts, as it will be his 14th address to foreign Parliaments, a record for an Indian Prime Minister.

Modi's visit to Guyana is part of a broader three-nation tour, which also includes stops in Nigeria and Brazil. His arrival in Guyana is noteworthy as he is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the country in over five decades. The Prime Minister’s address to the Guyanese Parliament will further strengthen India-Guyana relations and highlights Modi’s commitment to global diplomatic outreach.

Over the years, Prime Minister Modi has addressed Parliaments across the world, surpassing previous leaders in the number of foreign legislative speeches delivered. While former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh delivered seven addresses, Modi has now spoken in foreign Parliaments 14 times, setting a new record. Notable predecessors, including Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, addressed foreign Parliaments fewer times, with Gandhi speaking four times and Nehru three times.

Modi’s speeches have spanned continents, from the Americas to Europe, Africa, Australia, and Asia, showcasing India’s growing influence globally. He has addressed the joint session of the US Congress twice, once in 2016 and again in 2023. In 2014, he spoke to the Parliaments of Australia, Fiji, and Bhutan, and has since addressed legislatures in Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Afghanistan, Mauritius, Uganda, and the Maldives.

Earlier in his visit, Prime Minister Modi was awarded Guyana's highest national honor, "The Order of Excellence," by President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. This prestigious award recognizes Modi’s exceptional service to the global community, his leadership, and his role in strengthening India-Guyana relations.

Additionally, the Prime Minister was presented with the Dominica Award of Honour by the President of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Sylvanie Burton. This award acknowledges Modi's leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and his ongoing efforts to enhance India-Dominica ties.
