She emphasized the significance of the summit between India and CARICOM, highlighting the honor of hosting this high-level gathering of government leaders from the Caribbean region.
Strengthening India-CARICOM Relations
Mottley described the summit as an important step in strengthening ties between India and CARICOM nations. “We are all happy to have the opportunity to meet with PM Narendra Modi,” she said. The meeting, which brings together Heads of Government from the Caribbean and India, reflects the growing relationship between the two regions and the deepening cooperation between India and the island nations of CARICOM.

CARICOM’s Role and Significance
CARICOM, founded in 1973, consists of 21 nations, including 15 full members and six associate members, with a combined population of about 16 million. The organization focuses on economic integration, foreign policy coordination, and social and human development, and has expanded its global reach over the years, including establishing a single market and economy.
Historic Relations Between India and Barbados
PM Mottley noted that the last meeting between CARICOM leaders and India occurred during the UN General Assembly. She acknowledged the value of such interactions in strengthening ties between the two regions. India and Barbados share a close bond, collaborating actively in international forums like the UN, the Commonwealth, and NAM. Barbados has been a strong supporter of India’s candidacies in multilateral platforms, including UN elections.
A Strong Indian Diaspora in Barbados
Barbados is home to about 3,000 people of Indian origin, many of whom hold local citizenship. This strong Indian diaspora plays a key role in nurturing the close relationship between India and Barbados, contributing to cultural and community ties.
PM Modi’s Visit to Barbados: A Milestone
PM Modi’s visit is particularly significant as he is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Barbados in 56 years. During his trip, he will address a special sitting of Guyana’s parliament and attend the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit with Caribbean leaders.
