New Zealand Airport's Controversial Hug Time Limit Sparks Outrage

Dunedin Airport in New Zealand has introduced a controversial rule limiting hugs at the departures drop-off zone to just three minutes. The new sign reads, “For fonder farewells please use the car park,” which has sparked a wave of criticism online.

Many travelers expressed their frustration, deeming the time limit "inhumane." One user commented, "You can’t put a time limit on hugs! That’s inhumane." Others shared mixed feelings about the rule, with one person appreciating the change, comparing it favorably to stricter policies at other airports that impose fines for stopping to drop off passengers.

Social media users also joined in the conversation, joking about the enforcement of the new rule. One remarked, “I can see the airport worker now… 2:56, 2:57, 2:58, 2:59 OK time to break it up!” Another added humorously, “In America, they don’t even want you to stop. Just come to a slow roll and push your passenger out.”

In response to the backlash, Dunedin Airport stated that the change aims to improve safety and reduce congestion in the terminal area. CEO Daniel De Bono explained that the limited space in the drop-off zone was a factor in implementing the hug time limit. He pointed out that many people were spending excessive time saying goodbye, which created challenges for others trying to use the area.

De Bono also referenced a study suggesting that even a brief 20-second hug can trigger the release of oxytocin and serotonin, providing emotional benefits. He clarified, “We’re not here to tell people how long they should hug for. It’s more a message of, ‘Please move onwards.’ If you’re going to spend however long, sit in the car park. You get 15 minutes free, and it provides space for others who only want a 20-second hug.”
