Meta Platforms is reportedly working on a new artificial intelligence-based search engine to reduce its dependency on major search engines like Google and Bing. This move reflects Meta’s ambition to carve out its own niche in the competitive AI-driven search market, where companies like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft are already vying for dominance.
According to reports, the upcoming search engine will offer conversational responses to questions about current events on Meta's AI chatbot, accessible through popular platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. Currently, Meta’s chatbot relies on Google and Bing to provide updates on news, stocks, and sports, making this shift towards an in-house solution a significant step for the tech giant.
Other AI platforms like OpenAI also use Microsoft's Bing for real-time web data to handle user queries on timely topics. However, the rising trend of using web-scraped data to train AI models and search engines has led to increased concerns around copyright infringement and fair compensation for content creators.
Meta recently announced that its AI chatbot will incorporate Reuters content to deliver up-to-date answers on news and events, aiming to provide real-time insights while addressing some of these concerns over data sourcing.
