KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to visit New Delhi by the end of this month. Party sources said, Mamata Banerjee might use the opportunity to meet opposition leaders.
Trinamool Congress source said, the Chief Minister's probable visit to the national capital will have the Niti Aayog Governing Council meeting as its formal purpose.
We learned that Nitish Kumar, the head of the JD(U) and chief minister of Bihar, would call a gathering of opposition parties in the nation's capital around the same time. Banerjee will be present if that occurs," he said. He clarified that given that the Chief Ministers of other opposition-ruled states will be present at the Niti Aayog event, the likelihood of the meeting is extremely high.
The Trinamool Congress leader, however, would not clarify whether Banerjee would meet separately with either Sonia Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, or Mallikarjun Kharge, the party's national president.
Till now the official stand of Trinamool Congress is to keep up equal distance with both Bharatiya Janata party and Congress and instead continue dialogues with the like-minded regional parties.
Mamata Banerjee and Nitish Kumar recently met in the West Bengal state headquarters. Tejashwi Yadav, the deputy chief minister of Bihar, also attended.
She called on all opposition parties to cooperate while putting aside their egos during the discussion, but she made no mention of Congress in her party's plan for a unified opposition alliance.
It is known that even after the meeting, the Chief Ministers of West Bengal and Bihar are in continuous touch with each other and carrying out dialogues about uniting the opposition.
