Apple's iPhone 16 series, which is being manufactured in India, will be available for global purchase shortly after its release. This marks a significant milestone for India's manufacturing sector and the Make-in-India initiative, as it is the first time a global product made in India will be distributed worldwide so quickly after its launch.
Upcoming iPhone 16 Series Release:
Apple is scheduled to unveil the iPhone 16 series on Monday, with global sales expected to start within 10 to 12 days. Foxconn, one of Apple’s major contract manufacturers, has already begun production of the series in India. This year, even the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models will be shipped from Indian factories to international markets.
The iPhone 16 is set to be one of Apple's most advanced devices, featuring cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. This shift to India as a key production hub reflects Apple's strategy to diversify its manufacturing operations amid increasing geopolitical tensions between the United States and China.
India's Growing Role in iPhone Production:
In 2021, iPhone 13 models made in India reached global markets several months after their launch. By 2022, the availability gap for the iPhone 14 had shrunk to less than two weeks. Last year, Apple managed to produce the iPhone 15 simultaneously in India and China, although the Indian-made devices were only available locally on the first day of sales.
Currently, India contributes approximately 14 percent of Apple’s global iPhone production, up from 7 percent last year. Apple plans to increase this to 25 percent by 2025 as part of its strategy to reduce reliance on China.
Production and Export Figures:
Apple's contract manufacturers, including Foxconn Hon Hai, Pegatron, and Wistron (now owned by Tata Group), produced iPhones worth Rs.1.20 trillion in India during the financial year ending March 31, 2024. Of this, exports were valued at Rs.85,000 crore. These figures reflect the value of devices when they leave the factory, with retail prices generally about 60 percent higher.
This year, the made-in-India iPhone 16 series will be available in various countries shortly after the retail launch on September 10.
Apple remains a leading force in mobile phone exports from India, participating prominently in the Indian government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for smartphones. This initiative aims to enhance local manufacturing and boost exports.
