The central government has agreed to release drought relief funds to Karnataka, totaling Rs 3,498.82 crore, to address the state's severe groundwater shortages. The decision follows a series of legal battles and petitions, as the Siddaramaiah government fought with the central government for disaster relief funds. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah took to social media platform X to thank the Supreme Court for its intervention, stating that it was unprecedented for a state to take its fight to the Supreme Court to secure its rights.
He criticized the Ministry of Home Affairs for its delayed response, noting that the Home Minister acted only after the Supreme Court's involvement.Siddaramaiah expressed disappointment at the size of the funds released, stating that the state had requested Rs 18,000 crore but received only Rs 3,498.82 crore, calling the amount "woefully inadequate."
The Karnataka government had appealed to the Supreme Court in March to direct the Centre to release funds from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to help the state manage the crisis. This development comes after Bengaluru experienced a severe water shortage in March, falling short by 500 million liters of water per day (MLD) compared to the city's daily requirement of 2,600 MLDs. Of the city's 14,000 borewells, approximately 6,900 had reportedly dried up.
