Chennai: Cyclone Fengal, which has gained momentum in recent hours, is expected to make landfall near Chennai on Saturday afternoon, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre. Authorities have taken precautionary measures, including closing schools and colleges and urging fishermen to avoid the sea, as the cyclone is projected to cross close to Puducherry.

Red Alert and Weather Warnings
The meteorological department has issued warnings of high tides and rough seas, advising fishermen to stay ashore. A Red Alert has been declared in eight Tamil Nadu districts—Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, and Mayiladuthurai—where heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated on Saturday.

Government Precautions and Relief Measures
In light of the approaching cyclone, the Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in the affected districts. Additionally, the Revenue and Disaster Management Department has established 2,229 relief centres in areas expected to experience heavy rainfall. So far, 471 individuals from 164 families have been relocated to relief camps in the Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, with authorities prepared for further evacuations if necessary.

Impact on Transportation and Public Safety
With heavy rains and strong winds forecast, the Chennai International Airport has canceled 18 flights to and from the city. Public transport services on East Coast Road and Old Mahabalipuram Road will be suspended from Saturday afternoon for safety reasons.

The government has also issued a public safety advisory urging residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. IT companies have been advised to allow employees to work from home to minimize movement.

Safety and Preparedness Measures
The Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority has requested the public to avoid beaches, amusement parks, and other recreational areas. Parks and beaches in Chennai and nearby districts are closed, while the Greater Chennai Corporation has issued warnings against parking vehicles under trees during heavy rains.

Greater Chennai Corporation Mayor R. Priya assured residents that the civic body is fully prepared to handle the cyclone's impact. Around 28,000 workers have been deployed for relief efforts, with an additional 10 workers assigned to each of the 200 wards to address complaints. These teams are also involved in food distribution and rescue operations. Volunteers are maintaining communication with the authorities, and 36 boats are on standby for emergencies.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged the public to remain vigilant and prioritize safety.
