Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) Member of Parliament, Sanjay Raut, sparked controversy with his recent allegations against the BJP government regarding the conferment of Bharat Ratna awards. Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honor in India, has historically been bestowed upon individuals for their exceptional contributions to the nation in various fields.
Raut stated, "Bharat Ratna is given after seeing the political benefits of it. The law is that in a year only three people can be awarded with Bharat Ratna...Five people are being given. All this is being done for political benefits."
His assertions suggest a departure from tradition, indicating that political considerations may now be influencing the selection process for this prestigious award. By alleging that Bharat Ratna awards are being granted based on the perceived political advantages they offer, Raut raises serious questions about the integrity and impartiality of the awarding process.
Furthermore, his claim that the BJP government is disregarding the legal limit of three recipients per year by honoring five individuals adds weight to concerns about the politicization of Bharat Ratna.
Raut further stated, "Chaudhary Charan Singh is being awarded Bharat Ratna because they want Jayant Chaudhary to join their party." This specific example cited by Raut, wherein Chaudhary Charan Singh was posthumously awarded Bharat Ratna, allegedly to influence his grandson's political allegiance, underscores the extent of politicization within the awarding system.
If true, such actions not only diminish the prestige of Bharat Ratna but also undermine public trust in the government's ability to uphold the sanctity of national honors.
Overall, Raut's allegations highlight the need for greater scrutiny and accountability in the process of awarding Bharat Ratna, ensuring that it remains a symbol of excellence and integrity rather than a tool for political gain.
