The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 23, 2018, marked its sixth anniversary on Monday. This scheme has been instrumental in providing affordable healthcare to millions across India.

The Ministry of Health celebrated the milestone with a post on social media, stating, "Celebrating 6 years of Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY! Here's to 6 years of making healthcare affordable for millions. Each Ayushman card represents hope and access to quality care. Let's continue to strive for a healthier India where everyone thrives!"

Earlier this month, on September 11, the Union Cabinet approved health coverage for all senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of income, under the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme. This expansion ensures that all individuals over the age of 70, regardless of their socio-economic status, are eligible for the scheme's benefits.

AB PM-JAY is recognized as the world’s largest publicly funded health assurance program, offering a health cover of ₹5 lakh per family annually for secondary and tertiary hospital care. It currently benefits around 55 crore individuals, spanning 12.34 crore families. The scheme covers all members of eligible families, with no age restrictions.

Since its inception, AB PM-JAY has facilitated 7.37 crore hospital admissions, with 49% of the beneficiaries being women. The total benefit provided under the scheme has exceeded ₹1 lakh crore.

In January 2022, the Government of India expanded the scheme to include 12 crore families, reflecting the country’s population growth over the last decade. Additionally, 37 lakh ASHAs, Anganwadi Workers (AWWs), and Anganwadi Helpers (AWHs) and their families were also added, ensuring they receive free healthcare benefits.
