During the Indian Mobile Congress 2024 held at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti has emphasized the need to regulate platforms like Telegram and WhatsApp. He said that even though these platforms are beneficial for the people, it is also necessary to understand the concerns of law enforcement agencies.
Discussion on regulatory issues
At this event of IMC 2024, Lahoti clarified that these platforms providing Over the Top (OTT) services are benefiting not only the common people but also the companies doing business. He told that the Directorate of Law Enforcement has raised many regulatory issues, due to which it is being recommended to regulate these platforms. Lahoti said, "It is very important to take this step to create a balanced competitive market and promote regulation and innovation at the global level."
Concerns about fraud and spam cases
According to the report, an expert said that the Department of Telecommunication and TRAI have limited access to investigate cases like online fraud and spam. Telecom companies have complained about increasing cases of spam on WhatsApp and Telegram. Remember that only the Ministry of Electronics and IT can take action on these platforms under the I Act, because currently the Department of Telecommunication and TRAI are not regulating them.
