Kolkata: Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee took a swipe at the Congress party following its disappointing performance in the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council elections in Assam. Banerjee, addressing the Congress's seat-sharing aspirations in Bengal, remarked on social media, "One might say their (Congress) seat share aspirations in Bengal are akin to aiming for the stars when they couldn't quite grasp the ground in their own backyard!" The BJP secured 25 seats out of 30, retaining power in the NCHAC in Assam's Dima Hasao district. The TMC, making its debut in these polls, secured a 7.63% vote share, while the Congress drew a blank with an 8.87% vote share.
Banerjee's comments are part of the ongoing discussions within the INDIA bloc, where the TMC and Congress are allies, about the seat-sharing formula for the upcoming general elections. The TMC has proposed 2 out of 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal to the Congress. However, sources suggest that the Congress is not entirely satisfied with this allocation.
The Mamata Banerjee-led party asserts that the predominant party in the state should have the prerogative to make the final decision on seat sharing, sources added. The proposed seat-sharing numbers, according to sources, are determined by a clear formula that considers both parliamentary and state assembly elections.
