THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan said that the UGC guidelines will prevail in the running of universities, not just in Kerala, but all across the states in the country.

Since Khan stood his ground against the appointment of the wife of Vijayan's private secretary to a prominent teaching post at the Kannur University, he and the ruling Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left government have been at odds.

Recently, a Bill to depose the governor as chancellor of all Keralan universities is being debated in a special assembly session.

"The state government is aware that it has no authority over universities because our nation's educational system is uniform throughout all 50 states and will be governed by UGC laws. The nomination of vice-chancellors is currently being hampered, but with the Supreme Court's decision, everything is now crystal clear "Khan stated this while addressing the media on Saturday in Delhi.

"My only concern is that the student community should not suffer," Khan continued, adding that all vice-chancellors who have been given the opportunity to explain have had time to do so and that the situation will be resolved in a day or two.  Then, Khan said, "I'll wait for the Kerala High Court to rule, and until then, I won't make any decisions."

All ten vice-chancellors in Kerala have been given the boot ever since the highest court declared that the vice chancellor of KTU University in this country was not selected in accordance with the UGC standards. The High Court has heard a case challenging the injunction, and a decision is imminent.
