Xiaomi India President Muralikrishnan B has stepped down from his position at the company. Although official reasons for his departure have not been disclosed, reports indicate that he resigned to further his education. Sources close to the matter suggest that he plans to pursue a doctorate at the Indian School of Business. Muralikrishnan joined Xiaomi in 2018 as Chief Operating Officer (COO) and was later promoted to President.

Muralikrishnan’s exit comes as Xiaomi works to strengthen its market presence in India. During his tenure, he played a key role in helping the company regain traction in the Indian smartphone market. He initially focused on expanding Xiaomi’s offline retail operations and later took on broader responsibilities, including operations, services, public affairs, and strategic projects.

Xiaomi India has recently made strategic hires to adapt to the evolving market landscape. In February 2024, Kunal Agarwal, a former Samsung senior executive, was appointed as Deputy Sales Head to enhance offline outreach. In September 2024, Sudhin Mathur, former managing director of Motorola and Lenovo, joined as Xiaomi India’s COO.

The company has not yet made an official announcement regarding Muralikrishnan’s departure, though confirmation is anticipated by Tuesday. Following his resignation, Muralikrishnan will reportedly go on a six-month gardening leave, a common practice to prevent immediate employment with competitors.
