Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has moved the Karnataka High Court challenging Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot's order allowing prosecution against him in the alleged MUDA (Mysore Urban Development Authority) scam.
Governor's order and the response of the Council of Ministers
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot had recently sought permission to prosecute the Chief Minister. For this, he took the opinion of the cabinet. In the cabinet meeting on Thursday, the ministers advised the Governor to withdraw the show cause notice and termed it an attempt to destabilize the government elected by majority. Despite this, the Governor gave permission to prosecute the Chief Minister after consulting legal experts.
muda scam case
MUDA (Mysore Urban Development Authority) is the urban development agency of Karnataka, which works to promote urban development and provide affordable housing. In 2009, MUDA launched a 50:50 scheme, under which people who lost land were to get 50% of the developed land. This scheme was discontinued in 2020, but it is alleged that despite this, MUDA continued to acquire and allot land under this scheme.
allegations against chief minister
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his wife Parvathy have been accused of being benefited by MUDA under the 50:50 scheme without acquiring their land. The complainants claim that 3 acres and 16 guntas of land belonging to the Chief Minister's wife was acquired by MUDA and in return they were allotted 14 sites in an expensive locality. This land was gifted to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's wife by his brother Mallikarjuna Swamy in 2010.
Opposition's allegations
The opposition alleges that MUDA committed irregularities in the allocation of these 14 sites and gave undue benefits to the Chief Minister's wife. The opposition says that there is a possibility of scam in this allocation and the role of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is suspicious. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah says that he is approaching the High Court for justice in this matter and is challenging the order of the Governor. This entire controversy has created a stir in political circles and discussions are going on at many levels regarding this.
