New Delhi: Two bike-borne masked men threw acid on a 17-year-old girl who left home to go to school on Wednesday (December 14) morning in Dwarka, the capital of the country, leaving her seriously injured. The girl is undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital. This is not the first such incident in Delhi. The central government informed that 32 cases of acid attacks have been registered in Delhi in three years. The government pointed out that while these types of attacks had seen a decline during the pandemic, they increased again after the pandemic.

The data given in the Upper House shows that between 2018 and 2021, 32 cases of acid attacks were registered in Delhi. These figures have been given by quoting the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). In 2018, 11 cases of the acid attack were registered, while 10 such cases were reported in 2019, but during the Corona epidemic in 2020, such cases came down to 2. However, the official data given shows that in 2021, acid attack cases increased to 9.

There is anger among the people regarding the acid attack and people are also raising questions about the presence of acid in the market even after the ban. In one of its orders in 2015, the apex court ordered the state governments to ban the retail sale of acid. The court had also asked the central government to ensure that acid is not sold in the open market. Acid cannot be sold without a license even in Delhi. Not only this, but its buyer also has to give his identity.

To investigate this, in 2016, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) sent a team to the ground and tried to find out whether these rules made for buying acid are effective or not. The Women's Commission found that there were 23 such shops where acid was being sold without ID cards and without taking any identification. Later, the Women's Commission urged the Delhi government to take action on this. SDM is responsible for its investigation and he can also impose a fine of Rs 50,000 on those who break the rules.
