Kolkata: On June 22nd, the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) successfully dismantled a new cross-border terror network operating under the name “Shahadat.” The module's leader, Mohammed Habibullah, was apprehended by the authorities. Investigations have revealed links between this terror cell and members of “Ansar Al Islam,” an Al-Qaeda-affiliated group banned in Bangladesh.

According to officials, the STF arrested Mohammed Habibullah, the group's Ameer, from his home in Paschim Bardhaman. Habibullah is a second-year computer science student. Additionally, another suspect, Mohammed Hasibul Sheikh, was detained in Mirpara, within the Kanksha police station area of the West Burdwan district. The arrest was carried out by a special police squad from West Bengal, who raided a house in Mirpara under the Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate at around 3 AM.

Senior officers from the Asansol Durgapur Police and the STF questioned the detainee at the Kanksha police station following his arrest. He is expected to be transported to Kolkata for further interrogation. This significant breakthrough occurred after a specific tip-off led the authorities to his location.

The terror group primarily communicated using the encrypted messaging application “BiP.” According to SIT authorities, the group operated covertly with the goal of undermining the integrity and sovereignty of both India and Bangladesh. A case has been registered under the relevant provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
