Wayanad: The search for people missing in the multiple landslides in Wayanad will continue into its seventh day on Monday. Over 1,500 individuals, including fire force personnel and volunteers, are participating in the search operations in Mundakkai. Officials from the Army, Navy, forest department, NDRF, and police will persist in their search across six designated zones. Efforts in the Chaliyar river, which flows through Wayanad, Malappuram, and Kozhikode districts, will also resume soon.
Approximately 250 people remain unaccounted for in the landslide-affected areas of Mundakkai and Chooralmala. The district authorities have begun verifying if more individuals are missing due to the disaster.
On Monday morning, restrictions were imposed on entering the disaster-hit sites due to complaints of theft in abandoned homes. Only 1,500 people will be allowed to cross the Bailey bridge connecting Chooralmala and Mundakkai between 6 am and 9 am. On Sunday, the Army utilized an advanced drone to search and identified spots where human bodies might be trapped under the debris. These locations will be thoroughly searched by Army personnel and volunteers on Monday.
Reports indicate that the death toll from the disaster has climbed to 385, with 28 more bodies recovered from the Chaliyar river on Sunday. Official records now show that 221 bodies and 166 body parts have been found to date. Among these, 75 bodies and 142 body parts were recovered from the Chaliyar river alone. In total, 4,833 people have been affected by the landslides in Mundakkai, Chooralmala, and Attamala.
On Sunday, additional personnel and equipment were deployed to areas with a higher likelihood of finding bodies. A drone-based Intelligent Buried Object Detection System was used to pinpoint locations where bodies might be buried deep under large boulders or logs. To intensify the rescue efforts, hundreds of personnel from various forces, including the NDRF, K-9 Dog Squad, Army, Special Operations Group, Madras Engineering Group, Police, Fire Force, Forest Department, Navy, and Coast Guard, were deployed in the disaster-affected areas.
