DEHRADUN: The state of Uttarakhand is in deep mourning following a terrorist attack on an Indian Army convoy in Kathua district, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the death of five soldiers from the state.

The soldiers, all from the Garhwal Rifles regiment, were Naib Subedar Anand Singh Rawat (41) from Rudraprayag, Rifleman Anuj Negi (25) and Havildar Kamal Singh Rawat (28) from Pauri Garhwal district, and Rifleman Adarsh Negi (26) and Naik Vinod Singh Bhandari (33) from Tehri Garhwal district.

Their bodies were brought to Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport on Tuesday evening, where a wreath-laying ceremony was held to honor them with traditional military rites. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Haridwar MP and former CM Trivendra Singh Rawat, cabinet ministers Ganesh Joshi and Premchandra Agrawal, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Uttarakhand sub-area, Major General R Prem Raj, state DGP Abhinav Kumar, and other senior Army officers attended the ceremony.

Condemning the terrorist attack, CM Dhami stated, "This was a cowardly act. The entire nation and our state stand in solidarity with the grieving families. Their supreme sacrifice will not be in vain. Those responsible for this heinous act, as well as those who sheltered the terrorists, will not be spared. The government will provide all possible support to the families of our fallen heroes."

Lt Col Manish Shrivastava, defense public relations officer in Dehradun, mentioned that the body of Naik Bhandari was handed over to his family in Dehradun for the last rites. The bodies of the two soldiers from Pauri Garhwal were airlifted to Kotdwar city and then transported to their native villages by road for their final rites.
