The Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami-led government is set to introduce the Uniform Civil Code Bill in the state legislative assembly on Tuesday.
This announcement comes during the ongoing four-day special session of the assembly, which commenced on Monday.

The bill received approval from the Uttarakhand Cabinet on Sunday, following the endorsement of its final draft. The proposed bill aims to establish uniform civil laws applicable to all communities across the state.

Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal stated on Monday that the Uniform Civil Code is currently undergoing review by the Law Commission of India.
Meghwal emphasized the historical significance of this issue, mentioning that discussions on a uniform civil code date back to the drafting of the Indian Constitution. He noted that while the matter is being deliberated at the central level, states like Goa have already made progress in this regard. The approval of the UCC by the Uttarakhand cabinet aligns with this ongoing process.

Previously, a draft of the UCC was presented to the Chief Minister by a five-member committee chaired by retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai.
Once implemented, the UCC will establish consistent legal regulations concerning marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance applicable to all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliation.

The passage of the UCC Bill would signify the fulfillment of a significant electoral pledge made by the BJP in the lead-up to the 2022 Assembly elections.
In March 2022, the Dhami administration initiated the formation of a committee tasked with drafting the UCC.
