Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurated the Passenger Terminal Building at Sahastradhara Heliport on Thursday and launched the Dehradun-Almora Helicopter Service. He also announced the commencement of air services from Sahastradhara Heliport to three new destinations: Yamunotri, Gauchar, and Joshiyara, under the Chief Minister Udan Khatola Yojana for enhancing Uttarakhand's air connectivity. The CM interacted virtually with passengers from Almora during the event.
CM Dhami highlighted the state government’s long-standing efforts to establish this air service. He noted that Sahastradhara helipad had also undergone expansion in Dehradun. He mentioned that even before the launch of the Almora-Dehradun service, other routes such as Chinyalisaur, Gauchar, Munsyari, Srinagar, Haldwani, and Pithoragarh were already operational, ensuring that these services would benefit everyone.
The CM emphasized that the Dehradun-Almora helicopter service, under the Udan Khatola Yojana, would boost tourism, stimulate the economy, and create employment opportunities. He also stated that this service would help the women entrepreneurs of the state who are engaged in the production of local goods. He underscored that this initiative would enhance connectivity and improve the quality of life for residents.
Dhami remarked that Almora, an ancient city with historical and cultural significance, would become more accessible to tourists with the helicopter service. Notable landmarks such as Jageshwar Dham, Chitai Goljyu Ka Sthan, Katarmal Surya Mandir, and the Nanda Devi Temple would now be easier to visit, making travel quicker and more convenient compared to road journeys.
The Chief Minister credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for the modernization and indigenization of air services across India, emphasizing the importance of such services in geographically challenging states like Uttarakhand. He noted that while railways were once prioritized nationwide, air travel has emerged as a popular and efficient mode of transportation.
Dhami highlighted the importance of PM Modi’s long-term vision, which facilitated the expansion of the terminal, originally established during a disaster relief effort. He credited the efficient work of the state’s Civil Aviation Department, made possible with the guidance of the Prime Minister and the cooperation of the central government.
Under the Government of India’s 'Udaan' scheme, various regions of Uttarakhand are receiving improved air services. The state government is working to enhance transportation facilities for tourists and pilgrims, with air services playing a crucial role. Dhami added that the Jolly Grant Airport is being upgraded to international standards, with new terminals already inaugurated. The airport now offers flights to major cities across India. Additionally, over 800 acres have been allocated for the expansion of Pantnagar Airport, with all processes completed.
The CM also mentioned his request to the Prime Minister for proper operation of the Chinyalisaur airstrip and noted the ongoing trial landings for Pithoragarh. He said that two trial landings from Delhi to Pithoragarh had been conducted, with another one planned soon. Following PM Modi’s visit to Adi Kailash and Jageshwar Dham, the number of devotees visiting these sites has significantly increased. The state government is committed to expanding heli services further.
The newly constructed Passenger Terminal Building at Sahastradhara Heliport features state-of-the-art amenities. The terminal, built with an investment of Rs 24.82 crore, has a seating capacity for approximately 400 passengers and includes modern facilities for passenger convenience. The helicopter service on this route will be operated by Pawan Hans Limited using a double-engine helicopter, offering affordable rates for residents and tourists of Uttarakhand, particularly those in the Kumaon region. The service will operate six days a week, with fares set at Rs 4,989 per person for a 55-minute journey.
