Uttarakhand: A temporary bridge collapse near Devgad in Uttarakhand's Devgad area has resulted in two pilgrims being swept away and several others stranded. The incident occurred approximately 8 to 9 kilometers ahead of Gangotri on the Gomukh footpath on Friday.
Reports indicate that around 30 to 40 pilgrims are currently stranded due to the collapse, attributed to a sudden surge in river water levels. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) promptly responded to the situation, rescuing 16 pilgrims and providing assistance to others.
The collapse was reportedly triggered by increased water flow, possibly exacerbated by a nearby glacier movement near Chirbasa along the Gangotri-Gomukh trek route.
Rescue efforts are ongoing as authorities work to safely evacuate those stranded amid challenging conditions exacerbated by recent heavy rainfall across Uttarakhand. Last week, Haridwar witnessed vehicles being swept away in the Ganga River due to rising water levels, a scene widely shared on social media.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for the region, with an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall expected from July 5 to 7. Additionally, a red alert has been issued for several districts including Nainital, Bageshwar, Champawat, Almora, Pithoragarh, and Udham Singh Nagar.
The SDRF continues to conduct rescue operations, including the recent rescue of 10 youths from an island near Robbers Cave in Dehradun, using ropes to navigate the strong river currents.
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has assured preparations for the upcoming Kanwar Yatra, emphasizing the state's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants.
