New Delhi: Umar Khalid, a key figure facing allegations of conspiracy in the 2020 Delhi riots case, has suffered a setback as the Karkardooma Court of Delhi has denied him bail under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). This decision marks the second time his bail plea has been rejected by the court, following a previous denial in March 2022.

Having failed to secure relief from the Supreme Court, Khalid sought bail anew after withdrawing his earlier petition challenging the Delhi High Court's refusal to grant him bail in October 2022. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Khalid, informed the Supreme Court of this decision, citing changed circumstances and a fresh bail application before the trial court.

Umar Khalid, along with former JNU student Sharjeel Imam and others, faces accusations of conspiring in the February 2020 riots. The case against them involves various charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Arms Act, and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. Khalid specifically faces charges under sections 13, 16, 17, and 18 of the UAPA, among others.
