The Tripura government has announced the closure of all educational institutions until further notice in response to severe flooding caused by heavy rains. This decision affects government, government-aided, and private schools, colleges, and state-run universities across the state.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha communicated the closure via a social media update, stating, “Due to the ongoing flood situation, all educational institutions will remain closed until further notice. A formal notification will follow soon.” He also chaired a review meeting with the Chief Secretary and other officials to discuss the crisis.
During the meeting, Chief Minister Saha emphasized the urgency of rescue and relief efforts, instructing officials to assist stranded individuals and ensure the timely distribution of relief materials. He acknowledged the severity of the situation, noting, “The depression in the Bay of Bengal has caused unprecedented rainfall in Tripura, leading to significant flooding and landslides across many districts.”
Saha, who had been monitoring the situation from Delhi, inspected flood-affected areas in Agartala. He walked through waterlogged streets, engaged with affected families, and reassured them of the government's commitment to overcoming the crisis. “I visited the streets of Agartala, met with flood victims, and assured them that we are working to return to normalcy as soon as possible. We will provide all necessary support to ensure their well-being,” Saha shared on social media.
In response to the flood emergency, the Chief Minister has also directed several officials to support relief efforts under the Director of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs. This includes placing personnel from various departments at the disposal of the relief director to enhance coordination.
The India Meteorological Department forecasts that heavy to very heavy rainfall will continue in Tripura for the next two days. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Agartala reported that cyclonic circulations extending up to 7.6 km above sea level are expected to move north-north-westwards across West Bengal in the coming 48 hours.
