Kolkata: On Saturday, a leader of the Trinamool Congress, Gopal Tewari, was detained on charges of assaulting a woman in Kalna, West Bengal. The action against Tewari, who serves as the party's General Secretary, was initiated following a complaint by the woman and a viral video of the incident.

According to police reports, the woman accused Tewari of forcibly entering her house and assaulting her due to a land dispute. She also alleged that her daughter and mother-in-law were also attacked by Tewari and his associates. "The controversy erupted over a piece of land," the police stated. It was alleged that Tewari had fenced a wall near the woman's house, leading to a confrontation. During the ensuing scuffle, the woman and her family were allegedly assaulted.

Speaking to reporters, the woman recounted the incident: "The Trinamool leader bricked a piece of land next to our house. As the issue escalated, the accused and his gang beat my mother-in-law." "They returned and thrashed other members of my family. I was slapped," she added, noting that at least 50 people had barged into her house.
