Agartala: Ahead of the upcoming by-elections in two Tripura Assembly segments on September 5, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the leader of Tipra Motha, held a significant meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi. The meeting gains significance as the CPI(M) had recently engaged in discussions with Tipra Motha for its support in the assembly by-polls to the Dhanpur and Boxanagar seats in the Sepahijala district.

Sambit Swaraj, BJP's national spokesperson and northeast coordinator, shared the news on X (formerly known as Twitter), stating, "Shri Pradyot Manikya Ji had a productive meeting with Hon'ble Home Minister Shri Amit Shah Ji in Delhi today. They deliberated on ongoing discussions and the rights and welfare of indigenous people. Prime Minister's vision to secure rights and empower tribals is prominent in Tripura and across the nation." The meeting, held on Saturday, garnered reactions from leaders across states. Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed his confidence in achieving lasting solutions for indigenous communities in the North East with Amit Shah's guidance.

Although Tipra Motha's chief indicated that his party is "unlikely" to support CPI(M), which has fielded candidates in the bypolls, he remains a prominent advocate for tribal rights in Tripura. In a social media post, Debbarma emphasized that securing constitutional rights should be the priority for the Tiprasa people. He highlighted the significance of engaging with parties that ensure fundamental rights, regardless of their political labels. With Congress and Tipra Motha abstaining from the by-elections, the contest primarily rests between BJP and CPI(M). The Boxanagar by-election follows the demise of CPI(M) MLA Samsul Haque, while the Dhanpur seat's by-election results from Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik's resignation as an MLA.
