Kochi: A case has been filed by the Kerala Police against the state Congress chief K Sudhakaran, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly VD Satheesan, and other senior leaders in connection with the violence in Thiruvananthapuram during the party's march to the DGP office. Incidents of violence erupted in the state capital on Saturday during protests organized by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). Senior Congress leaders in Kerala, including MPs and MLAs, experienced suffocation, and some were hospitalized after police deployed tear gas shells.
A senior police official in the district confirmed that the case was registered under various provisions of the IPC, including rioting, obstructing roads, and preventing public servants from performing their duties. The case encompasses all leaders and party workers who participated in the protest. Besides Sudhakaran and Satheesan, the case was registered against MPs Shashi Tharoor, Kodikkunnil Suresh, Adoor Prakash, K Muraleedharan, Jebi Mather, MLA Ramesh Chennithala, and others.
According to the official, the situation escalated when protesters aggressively shook the barricades after a nearly concluded meeting. In response, the police sprayed water, leading to irritation among the protesters who then threw stones, prompting the release of tear gas. Approximately 300-400 people participated in the protest, with no reports of injuries, although a few journalists suffered injuries during stone-pelting, none of whom officially complained to the police.
The KPCC organized the march, alleging police atrocities against its workers during the agitation over the Left government's 'Nava Kerala Sadas' outreach program. During the protest, a tear gas shell exploded behind the stage where senior leaders were addressing the crowd, causing discomfort to many, including Sudhakaran and Chennithala. Sudhakaran was later hospitalized. While Congress and UDF leaders characterized it as a "premeditated attack" targeting their lives, the ruling CPI(M) and LDF justified the police action, asserting that opposition party activists were attempting to create issues.
