New Delhi: Former Indian Ambassador to the United States, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the party's headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday. Expressing his admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, Sandhu highlighted his decade-long collaboration, particularly in strengthening relations with the United States and Sri Lanka. Emphasizing the importance of development, Sandhu underscored the need for progress, especially in his hometown of Amritsar. He expressed gratitude towards the party president, Prime Minister, and Home Minister for encouraging him to embark on a new journey of national service.
Sandhu, a native of Amritsar, is speculated to be a potential candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from the constituency. Addressing the media after joining the BJP, Sandhu indicated his focus on Amritsar, stating that his decision to join the party aligns with his goal of contributing to the development of his hometown. He expressed willingness to contest elections if the party believes his candidacy would aid in Amritsar's progress. Sandhu concluded his tenure as India's Ambassador to the US in January of this year, after serving in the position since February 3, 2020, succeeding Harsh Vardhan Shringla. Prior to his role in the US, Sandhu served as the High Commissioner of India in Sri Lanka.
With over three decades of distinguished service in the Indian Foreign Service, Sandhu held various significant positions, including postings in the former Soviet Union and the establishment of a new Embassy in Ukraine after the USSR's dissolution. He also served at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York and held roles at the Ministry of External Affairs, including Joint Secretary positions and serving as Consul General of India in Frankfurt. Sandhu's diplomatic career also saw him as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Washington D.C. from July 2013 to January 2017.
