In his place, his daughter and MLA Praniti Shinde is going to be the Congress candidate from Solapur Lok Sabha constituency. 83-year-old Shinde has announced his retirement in Solapur on Tuesday.
After participating in the Dhamma Chakra Pravartan Diwas program in Solapur, Shinde said in the media, "I am publicly saying that Praniti will contest the Lok Sabha elections (Solapur Lok Sabha constituency). Shinde is one of the senior most Congress leaders in Maharashtra. He has held many important positions like Union Home Minister, Union Energy Minister, Leader of the House in the Lok Sabha and also served as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. The three-time MP from Solapur Lok Sabha seat was also the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for a short period during January 2003 and November 2004. It is noteworthy that he had also lost the Lok Sabha elections from this seat in 2014 and 2019.
Shinde completed his career as an employee in the sessions court of Solapur around 1957. Later, he joined the Maharashtra Police Force as a constable and got promotion as SI where he served in the state CID (Criminal Investigation Department) for six years. In 1971, he started his political career by joining Congress. His daughter Praniti was a three-time MLA from Solapur City Assembly constituency.
