Stone Pelting During Durga Idol Immersion Procession in Gonda's Muslim-Dominated Area

Lucknow: Communal tension erupted in Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh after stone pelting on Durga idol immersion procession. The incident took place in Nagar Kotwali police station area of ​​Gonda on 12 October 2024, when the procession was moving towards Khaira Mandir Talab. Hundreds of devotees were involved in this procession.

 

When the procession was passing through the Muslim-dominated Mohalla Ghosiana, stones were alleged to have been thrown at the devotees from there. This stone pelting created an atmosphere of chaos, and the devotees started sloganeering expressing their displeasure. As a result, vegetable carts in the vicinity were also overturned, making the situation more tense. Angry devotees sat on a dharna near Takiya Masjid located near the incident site. Additional police force was deployed on the spot to control the situation. Police along with senior officials tried to convince the people, and after some time the situation became normal. Eventually the immersion of idols was completed under tight police security.

Superintendent of Police IPS Vineet Jaiswal said that the search for the stone pelters is on and investigation and necessary legal action is being taken in the case. Police also said that the procession was completed safely, despite the fact that stones were thrown from 2-3 storey houses located on the immersion route.
