VISAKHAPATNAM: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy announced ex-gratia payments of Rs 2 lakh to the relatives of five passengers died when the Konark Express collided with them in Srikakulam district on Tuesday.
On Monday night, five passengers on the Guwahati Express were killed and one was injured at Bathuva in the G. Sigadam mandal of Srikakulam district. The tragedy happened as the train came to a halt near the Batuva railway gate due to a technical issue. Some passengers in the general compartment descended to obtain some fresh air. When the speeding Konark Express ran over them, they were relaxing on an adjacent track.
Officials briefed Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy on the tragedy after district collector Srikesh B. Lathkar filed a report. Five people were killed, and one was badly injured, said the collector.
Based on the identity cards found on two of the deceased, they were identified as Assamese residents. The search for the remaining bodies was underway. It's also possible that they're from another state.
Despite the fact that the deceased were from other states, the chief minister stated that an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh should be provided to their families on humanitarian grounds. The injured person was taken to RIMS Hospital in Srikakulam on the same train. The district collector paid a visit to the hospital to ensure that those who had been hurt received the best possible care.
