Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan of Kerala extends his warm greetings to the populace of the state on the auspicious occasion of Onam.
In an official statement issued on Monday, Khan conveyed, "I extend my heartfelt Onam wishes to the residents of our state as well as to fellow Keralites around the globe."
He continued, "The observance of Onam brings to mind the cherished heritage of a life characterized by equality, unity, and prosperity, illuminating every household with the celestial delight of festivities. Let us unite to propagate the melodious tune, enchantment, and radiance of Onam across the world, embodying Kerala's distinct message of love, equality, and concord."
Earlier, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the Kerala Tourism's Onam cultural festival in the district of Thiruvananthapuram. The Chief Minister inaugurated the cultural festival organized by the tourism department at the Nishagandhi Auditorium in the state capital on Sunday.
The 10-day Onam revelries in Kerala commenced with the Atham celebrations on August 20. This festival pays homage to King Mahabali and Vamana. As a tribute to Mahabali, individuals begin crafting floral carpets (Pookkalam) in front of their abodes and institutions. Festivities of various kinds kick off in schools, universities, offices, and various other locales.
Throughout the Onam festival, people commonly attire themselves in traditional kasavu saris and mundu (dhoti). It's a time when family members and friends congregate, exchanging gifts such as new garments. Distinctive culinary delights are prepared at home and shared with others during the festival. A notable highlight of the Onam celebrations is the preparation of Onasadya, a special vegetarian feast.
Onam is observed during the Chingam month, marking the inception of the Malayalam calendar and symbolizing a harvest commemoration.
