Forest fires in Uttarakhand continue to rage, with 47 new incidents reported in a single day, damaging approximately 53 hectares of forest area. The state has seen a total of 478 incidents during this fire season, leading to the destruction of 571 hectares of forest land. These fires pose a severe threat to the state's biodiversity and natural resources. The affected areas include New Tehri, Ranikhet, Almora, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Champawat, Narendranagar, Uttarkashi, Terai East, Lansdowne, Haldwani, Ramnagar, Rudraprayag, Kedarnath Forest Division, Rajaji Tiger Reserve, and Nanda Devi National Park.
Despite the efforts of the Forest Department, controlling the fires remains difficult. Nishant Verma, the nodal officer for forest fires, noted that rising temperatures have increased forest fire activity. The department is closely monitoring satellite alerts, verifying ground reports quickly, and taking prompt action when fires are detected.
Efforts are also being made to involve the community more in fire prevention and containment. The fire season in Uttarakhand begins in mid-February and lasts until mid-June, characterized by dry foliage and low soil moisture due to higher temperatures. This pattern makes forest conservation efforts particularly challenging.
