Ernakulam: Two significant figures within the Syro-Malabar Church hierarchy, Cardinal Mar George Alenchery and Ernakulam-Ankamali Archdiocese Administrator Mar Andrews Gam, have tendered their resignations. This unexpected move comes amidst an ongoing struggle to address liturgical issues within the Church.
The resignations of Cardinal Mar George Alenchery and Administrator Mar Andrews Gam were submitted to the Pope, citing their failure to reach a decisive resolution on the matter. A press conference scheduled by Kakkanad this evening will reveal further decisions, including the acceptance of these resignations.
In the wake of these resignations, a shuffle in leadership positions has been announced. Former decision-maker in the Syro-Malabar Church, Mar Bosco Puttur, will step in as the new administrator of the Ernakulam-Angamali Archdiocese. Concurrently, the position of Major Archbishop vacated by Mar George Alenchery will be filled by the current Curia Bishop, Mar Sebastian Vaniapurakkal.
The Vatican's drastic action is aimed at achieving unified worship practices across the entire Syro-Malabar Church, specifically targeting the Ernakulam-Angamali Archdiocese, which presently lacks uniformity in its Mass. To ensure this unity by December 25, Archbishop Cyril Vasile Ayiri, appointed as the new papal representative, will oversee the implementation of a unified Eucharist for Christmas in the archdiocese.
Further measures have been outlined, including the expulsion of priests unwilling to conduct a unified Mass for Christmas and the temporary closure of churches until the unified Mass is observed. Pope Francis is scheduled to address these developments in a video message during today's press conference held at St. Thomas Mount in Kakkanad.
The upcoming Synod in January will be crucial, with decisions expected to include the appointment of a new archbishop for the Ernakulam-Angamali Archdiocese. Until then, the Kooriya bishop will manage the church's administration.
Criticism has been directed at the cardinal and sub-administrator for their failure to make timely decisions regarding the liturgical disputes in the Ernakulam-Angamali Archdiocese.
It's worth noting that Cardinal Mar George Alenchery had expressed his intent to resign a year ago, indicating his willingness to step down if he posed an obstacle to resolving the issue. However, the Pope advised him to remain in his position at that time. Similarly, Administrator Andrews Downing, after assuming the role of CBCI president, showed reluctance to continue in his post.
The unfolding developments within the Syro-Malabar Church's leadership reflect a crucial moment in the Church's efforts to resolve internal disputes and achieve liturgical unity.
