Panaji: 75 years of the country's independence are about to be completed. The tricolour was to be hoisted on all the islands of the country as part of the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence and in this order, the Indian Navy was scheduled to unfurl the tricolour at Sao Jacinto Island in Goa, but the Navy has postponed its plan following protests by locals. According to a recent report, the local people living on the island opposed the central government's decision and said, "They do not want any central or state government activity to take place on the island.''

The Indian Navy dropped its plan following this protest. The people here have now claimed that they are not opposed to unfurling the tricolour, but they will hoist the flag themselves. In a statement issued last Friday, the Navy said, "As part of the 'Amrit Mahotsav of Independence' to mark 75 years of Independence, the Ministry of Defence has planned to hoist the national flag in islands across the country between August 13 and 15, 2021.'' At the same time, the Indian Navy in its statement also said, "A team from the Goa Naval Area visited the islands of Goa, including Sao Jacinto Island, as an all-India initiative. However, the plan on Jacinto Island had to be scrapped, as residents opposed it. The initiative has been taken across the country to inculcate a sense of patriotism and celebrate the 75th year of Independence.''

You must all know that San Jacinto Island is located south of Panaji. The island is mostly inhabited by Christians and has two churches dedicated to St. Hyacinth (Sao Jacinto) and St. Dominic (Sao Domingo) in Poland. Residents of the island have banned entry, and tourists are not allowed to travel.
