New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned that dense fog might impact visibility during the 75th Republic Day parade and celebrations in New Delhi. According to the weather department, visibility is expected to be limited to only 400 meters until 8:30 am on Friday due to foggy conditions. However, visibility levels may improve to 1,500 meters by 10:30 am.
The Met office predicts that the minimum temperature will settle in the range of 5 to 7 degrees Celsius. The prolonged and dense fog over the plains in the region since December 25 is attributed to the absence of active western disturbances. Western disturbances are weather systems originating in the Mediterranean region that bring unseasonal rainfall to northwest India. Normally, the region experiences five to seven western disturbances during these months, but this winter has seen a lack of strong disturbances.
The IMD notes that the prevailing El-Nino conditions, marked by abnormal warming of surface waters in the central Pacific Ocean, contribute to the absence of active western disturbances. Fog formation typically requires weak low-level winds, moisture, and overnight cooling. Strong western disturbances, characterized by robust winds and precipitation, disrupt these conditions, leading to reduced fog formation.
