Malappuram: Kerala police have registered their first FIR under the new criminal code, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), against a 24-year-old man from Karnataka. The man was charged with rash and negligent driving in the Kondotty police station area early Monday.

The case was filed against the man from Madikeri, Karnataka, under Section 281 of the BNS (Rash driving or riding on a public way) and Section 194D of the Motor Vehicle Act (Penalty for not wearing protective headgear). He was caught driving a two-wheeler with two others without wearing helmets by a police team at Kolathur junction around midnight.

Kondotty police SHO A Deepakumar stated that the FIR was registered at 12:20 am. Since the offense was bailable, the man was released after the FIR was filed, but his bike was confiscated.

On Monday, three new criminal laws came into effect, significantly changing India's criminal justice system. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) have replaced the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Indian Evidence Act, respectively.
