Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has issued an apology in the Rajasthan High Court to address the controversy that ensued after his remarks on the judiciary were widely criticized. In his written submission, Gehlot disassociated himself from the controversial remarks, stating that they did not reflect his personal beliefs. He also extended an apology for any offense or hurt caused by his comments.

The controversy began about a month ago when on August 30, the Chief Minister made a statement to reporters, alleging corruption within the judicial system. He asserted, "Corruption is rampant in the judiciary today. I have heard that some lawyers themselves take the judgment in writing and the same judgment is pronounced." These comments triggered a strong backlash from the legal community, with lawyers in Rajasthan's Jodhpur initiating a one-day strike in protest and filing a case against the Chief Minister. Additionally, a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed seeking contempt proceedings against him.

The PIL was scheduled for a hearing on September 5, prompting Gehlot to clarify his earlier remarks. He emphasized that his comments about corruption within the judiciary were not reflective of his personal opinion. Furthermore, he affirmed his deep respect for and trust in the judicial system. The Chief Minister's apology in the Rajasthan High Court marks an attempt to put an end to the controversy and mend relations with the legal fraternity, reaffirming his commitment to upholding the integrity of the judiciary.
