UTTARAKHAND: The relentless downpour on July 16 wreaked havoc in Uttarakhand, triggering perilous landslides that obstructed numerous roads. The situation worsened as the mighty Ganga River surpassed the danger mark in Devprayag and reached the warning level in Haridwar, owing to the copious release of water from the Alaknanda river dam.

Authorities reported that the Ganga's water level soared to 463.20 meters, causing inundation in Sangam Ghat, Ramkund, Dhaneshwar Ghat, and Fuladi Ghat. This surge was a consequence of releasing 2,000-3,000 cusecs of water from the GVK hydroelectric project dam, situated on the Alaknanda river.

Brijesh Bhatt, the Disaster Management officer of Tehri District, emphasized the urgency of the situation and urged the public to steer clear of the riverbanks. In the Muni ki Reti area of Tehri, near Rishikesh, the water level rose to 339.60 meters—0.10 meters above the warning level of 339.50 meters.

Yamuna River Recedes to Safer Levels: After relentlessly swelling for a week and breaching its all-time record of 207.49 meters set in 1978 by reaching 207.71 meters on Wednesday, the Yamuna River's water level receded to 205.52 meters. As of Friday at 11 p.m., it remained three meters above the danger mark of 205.33 meters.

Delhi's Flood Situation Improves: Roadways Reopen- With the improving flood situation in the National Capital, the Delhi Traffic Police announced the reopening of certain roads, including Bhairon Marg, for traffic movement.

As per the traffic advisory, the stretch of the Ring Road from ISBT Kashmere Gate to Timarpur and Civil Lines (Mall Road side) has also been reopened. Additionally, the Ring Road stretch from Sarai Kale Khan to IP Flyover to Rajghat is accessible for light vehicles. However, the section from Shanti Van to Monkey Bridge and Yamuna Bazar-ISBT on the Ring Road remains closed.

Haridwar on High Alert - In Haridwar, the Ganga River surged past the warning level of 293 meters, reaching 293.15 meters on Sunday evening. Consequently, an alert has been issued for the low-lying areas due to the escalated river level.

The State Disaster Operation Centre has directed Haridwar District Magistrate Dheeraj Singh to expedite the repair of Gate No. 10 of the Bhimgoda barrage to mitigate potential heavy losses caused by the high-speed water flow through the breached gate.
