KOCHI:The Railways and NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) Arakkonam  and Thrissur Units jointly organised a full-scale train accident joint exercise on Thursday with Kerala Fire and Rescue Services at Ernakulam Marshalling Yard

Mock drills help participants better understand their roles in the rescue and restoration from a trial-generated real-world accident or disaster scenario.

The exercise was held to evaluate rescue operations’ readiness and practises, impart knowledge on accident reporting procedures, disseminate information on accident reporting guidelines. Improve inter-departmental coordination and transfer of expertise across all coordinating agencies. 

A train accident involving a passenger train coach that had derailed, capsized and caught fire at the Ernakulam Marshalling Yard was reported to maintenance wings and all parties involved at 8:15 am on May 18. Shortly after, the rescue operation started.

After giving first aid at the scene and putting out the fire, all trapped passengers were released alive and sent to the closest hospital. The coach was later re-rail with the aid of a crane. According to the official release, a debriefing session was held at the conclusion to identify the lessons discovered for enhancing teamwork and the effectiveness of the units for Disaster Management.

Participants in the exercise were the DMO Health Department in Ernakulam, the Kerala Police, the district disaster management authority, the district administration, 200 railway employees, and 40 members of the NDRF. According to the official statement, 24 members of the Fire and Rescue Service and 4 fire tenders managed the fire control exercise effectively.

The purpose of the exercise was to assess the preparedness and practises of rescue operations, to disseminate information on accident reporting rules, and to impart expertise on accident reporting practises. Enhance knowledge transmission between departments and among all collaborating agencies.

In this mock drill, new machinery such as  plasma cutters, cold-cutting equipments, special fire-fighting equipment, etc was used.
