AGARTHALA: With the construction of various new railway line projects linking the neighbouring nations, Indian Railways is considerably advancing the Prime Minister's vision of the "Act East Policy" and the "Neighbourhood First Policy."

One of the important projects that is nearing completion is the construction of the international rail line connecting Agartala, India, and Akhaura, Bangladesh. The construction of a railway line linking Bangladesh's Akhaura and Tripura's Agartala is currently in full swing.

The 15.064 km long railway line, which connects Bangladesh's Akhaura to Nischintapur, which will be a dual gauge station for passenger and cargo interchange between India and Bangladesh, is made up of 5.05 km in India and 10.014 km in Bangladesh. Three small bridges and one main bridge are part of the project. After the project is finished, the approximately 31-hour trip from Agartala to Kolkata through Dhaka will take only 10 hours.

The new rail project will strengthen ties between India and Bangladesh, fostering the development of border region small businesses and boosting travel to the NE region, particularly Tripura. Additionally, it will facilitate speedier commodity import and export as well as quicker export of local agricultural products.

The project's Indian part is expected to cost Rs. 862.58 crores to complete. The Ministry of DONER is responsible for funding the project. Approximately Rs. 708.74 crores have already been given and used. The Ministry of DONER is currently in the process of allocating the remaining funds necessary to finish the project. However, Indian Railways has made the proactive decision to allocate Rs. 153.84 crores from its own budget in order to expedite work on the remaining segment. With the availability of the funds, the work is underway in full force.
