Wayanad: Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi embarked on a visit to the homes of two victims of recent wild elephant attacks in the high-range district, extending his condolences to their bereaved families.
Gandhi's journey commenced from Kannur district on Saturday evening, following the suspension of his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Varanasi due to vehement protests from locals demanding resolutions to the human-animal conflicts in his constituency. Accompanied by AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal and other local leaders, Gandhi traveled by road to Wayanad.
At the residence of Aji (42), who fell victim to a fatal trampling by a radio-collared elephant in the Mananthavady area of Wayanad, Gandhi spent over 20 minutes consoling the grieving family. Later, he paid a visit to the home of Paul, an eco-tourism guide of the forest department, who succumbed to a wild tusker attack near Kuruva island on Friday, offering his sympathies to the family during his stay.
Gandhi's itinerary also includes a visit to the house of Prajeesh, a recent victim of a tiger attack. Additionally, he is scheduled to convene an assessment and review meeting with district officials at the PWD rest house in Kalpetta before departing for Allahabad in the afternoon.
Wayanad has witnessed a surge in attacks on livestock and humans in recent times, prompting various political parties to call for a hartal in protest against the escalating wild animal incidents. However, the hartal turned violent in Wayanad on Saturday.
