New Delhi: Following the conclusion of voting for the Lok Sabha polls and the exit polls indicating a potential victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Narendra Modi, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to participate in a virtual meeting with all party candidates on Sunday morning, as per party sources.
The meeting, slated for 11 am, will also include party chief Mallikarjun Kharge. Following this, Kharge and Gandhi will hold another virtual meeting at 1 pm with prominent Congress leaders from across the country. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Sachin Pilot, and other party leaders are expected to attend to discuss assessments and preparations for June 4, the day of the vote count. Congress sources have stated that the 1 pm meeting will be live-streamed.
This meeting follows closely on the heels of the opposition-led Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc gathering at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's residence in the national capital on Saturday. Leaders from various parties including Congress, Samajwadi Party, CPI-M, CPI, DMK, JMM, AAP, RJD, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (Sharad Pawar) convened for discussions.
The Lok Sabha voting, which included 543 members, took place concurrently with Assembly elections in Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. With the conclusion of the extensive voting process spanning seven phases on Saturday, the vote counting is set for June 4.
Exit polls on Saturday predicted a potential hat-trick win for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) with a significant majority, suggesting an improvement in performance in several states governed by other parties. Some exit polls even hinted at the BJP-led NDA reaching or exceeding the "400 paar" goal set by BJP leaders prior to the polls.
These exit polls also indicated an enhancement in the ruling BJP-led NDA's performance compared to the 2019 elections, where they secured 352 seats. Additionally, two polls suggested that the BJP could surpass its 2019 tally of 303 seats.
As the Narendra Modi-led BJP seeks a third consecutive term in power, the opposition INDIA bloc aims to challenge their dominance and potentially alter the political landscape.
